The first year of dog ownership is typically more expensive due to initial costs like adoption or purchase fees, supplies, and veterinary care. Subsequent annual expenses may include pet insurance, medical care, food, grooming, toys, treats, and dog walking or sitting services.

First-Year Ownership Expenses:

• Initial purchase or adoption fee: $100 to $2,500.
• Veterinary care: $375 to $1,875.

Acquiring a new dog can be done through purchase from a breeder or adoption from a shelter. Costs vary widely, with breeders charging $500 to $2,500+ and shelters $100 to $500. Research is crucial to find a reputable source, with veterinarians and breed organizations being valuable resources for referrals.

Initial Medical Expenses

After acquiring a new dog, initial veterinary costs for vaccines and spaying/neutering should be budgeted between $50 and $500. Microchipping is an additional cost, typically between $25 and $75, and is essential for the dog’s safety.
